An Overview
When did the Me Too movement start? This is a more complicated question than it seems. The #MeToo that we know started in 2017 with a tweet from Alyssa Milano, from there it spread like wildfire, seemingly overnight. But this movement is not an overnight sensation, it is the work of Tarana Burke who used the phrase in this way for the first time in 2006, when she started the organization Just Be Inc. that focused on the health and well-being of young women of color. What is #Me Too? It is the belief that women and men should not have to suffer from sexual violence in any aspect of their life - home, work, or school. The phrase allowed millions of women to come forward with their own stories and create a narrative that changed the story from an individual issue into a societal issue. This website shares a timeline of how the movement started, key components of the movement (leaders and organizations), videos relating to the movement, resources to find out more about the movement and sexual harassment in general, and how Political Opportunity Theory and Resource Mobilization Theory are useful to analyze the Me Too Movement. |
